This guide from the Department of Health is aimed at the boards of healthcare organisations, as they provide an essential risk and safety oversight function.

The guide provides a practical set of steps and methods for boards to establish an effective assurance framework within which risks can be managed – including risks to patient safety.

It also provides a simple structure to support boards in gathering and structuring evidence related to internal control systems, and methods to help boards report on and prioritise action plans to address risks and monitor performance.

Note: This is now a historical NHS archived document, and while it provides a useful document for reference and information it should not be considered to provide up-to-date policy guidance
