This care pathway developed by NHS Scotland can be used in emergency departments to improve the acute management of diabetic ketoacidosis in adults aged 16 years and over, within the first 4 hours of presentation.

Although developed for Scotland the generic concepts should be applicable to designing safer care pathways for any health system.
