Group based diabetes self-management education compared to routine treatment for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus - a systematic review with meta-analysis

In 2003 NICE recommended the use of structured diabetes education. This useful systematic review, with meta-analysis, provides a useful update up to 2008 on the evidence from randomised controlled trials evaluating group-based Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) for adults with type-2 diabetes versus routine treatment.
The review also highlights the potential characteristics of an effective programme. It concludes that interventions delivered by a single educator, in less than ten months, with more than 12 hours and between 6 and 10 sessions give the best results - though more research is needed to confirm this. It can be concluded that group-based DSME in people with type 2 diabetes results in improvements in clinical, lifestyle and psychosocial outcomes.
