Nutritional assessment in elderly care: a MUST!
This Quality Improvement Report carried out an audit on the use of the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST). It found that patients did not consistently have a MUST score documented, the scores were calculated incorrectly and that high MUST scores were not being acted on appropriately.
Interventions to improve the use of the MUST score included regular training to nurses and weekly ward rounds by a dietician. This resulted in an increased proportion of MUST scores being calculated and increased rates of patients being referred to dieticians.
