This paper in the American Journal of Public Health was the first published set of standards focused on patient safety in prisons, adapted from the emerging literature on quality improvement. The team convened a panel of correctional experts, which recommended 60 patient safety standards focusing on such issues as creating safety cultures at organisational, supervisory, and staffing levels.

Although focused on a US prison system the standards and learning can be applied to most countries aiming to improve patient safety in this setting.
