Sepsis is a commonly encountered problem and a major cause of mortality in 80% of children worldwide. Previously published pediatric sepsis guidelines were mostly applicable to developed countries; a perceived need for simple guidelines particularly applicable to resource-limited countries inspired the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) Intensive Care Chapter to formulate such guidelines.

These guidelines provide recommendations for interventions and monitoring modalities which can be delivered in a varied spectrum of healthcare settings from a tertiary level hospital to a primary care office. They therefore may be particularly useful to those working in remote areas as well as resource limited settings. This is particularly relevant in sepsis where intervention is time critical and should promote early and rapid treatment of sepsis across many different healthcare settings.
