The Early Detection of Maternal Deterioration in Pregnancy

This discussion paper considers how to detect maternal deterioration during both the antenatal and peripartum periods. It discusses the use and validity of early warning scores, the challenges of altered physiological parameters in pregnancy and the extension of the Sepsis Six care bundle used in non-maternity settings to the Sepsis Six Plus Two which can be applied in maternity care.

Snapshot: Safer maternity services

This Health Foundation Snapshot report offers a set of brief case studies examining how three trusts have worked to improve communication and handovers in their maternity units. The report identifies key actions that can be taken and distils key lessons learnt. The approaches discussed include implementing standardised communication practices such as the 'SBAR' approach, daily briefings, briefings prior to elective caesarean sections along with debriefings afterwards.
